Overview

Teslas are the most common car we are asked about in Austin, and they are genuinely different to detail. The paint is soft, the sensor and camera surfaces are functional rather than decorative, and the interior is dominated by two materials that most all-purpose products damage. None of that is a criticism of the car — it just means the process has to be chosen for it.

The paint is soft, and it shows every wash

Tesla's factory finish is widely regarded among detailers as thinner and softer than most German or Japanese paint, and the water-based systems used are easy to mar. In practice that means swirl marks appear quickly from ordinary washing, and it means correction has to be conservative — soft paint cuts fast but also hazes fast, so a finishing pass matters more than an aggressive cutting pass. We take depth readings and test-spot before touching a panel.

Why automatic car washes are the wrong choice here

Brush and even so-called touchless automatic washes are the fastest way to ruin a soft finish: spinning media drags grit across the clear coat, and the high-alkalinity chemistry strips protection. Tesla's own guidance leans toward hand washing, and on a coated car the difference over a couple of years is dramatic. If the car is being washed at a tunnel every fortnight, correction is a recurring cost rather than a one-off.

Cameras, sensors and the panel gaps

Autopilot cameras, the repeater housings and the radar/ultrasonic apertures need cleaning without any product build-up or film across the lens, and they should never see abrasive polish. We mask them during correction and clean them separately. Panel gaps on some build years hold water and wash residue, so drying is done with filtered air rather than left to run out over the paint later.

Ceramic coating makes more sense on a Tesla than on most cars

Because the paint marrs easily and the owner's washing routine is the main variable, a coating is unusually worthwhile here: it makes contamination release with far less contact, which is exactly the mechanism that causes swirls in the first place. The coating still will not prevent a rock chip, and it does not remove existing defects — correction has to come first on any car that has been through a tunnel wash.

The interior: vegan leather, the screen and the glass roof

Tesla's synthetic upholstery is a coated polyurethane, not hide. It cleans easily with mild, pH-appropriate chemistry, but solvent-heavy or high-alkaline interior cleaners degrade the topcoat and cause the light-coloured trims to yellow and crack at the seams. Denim dye transfer onto white interiors is the single most common problem we are asked to fix, and it responds better the sooner it is treated. The centre screen has an anti-glare coating that ammonia-based glass cleaner will damage — it gets a dedicated screen-safe cleaner and a plush towel only. The glass roof shows water spotting badly in Austin's hard water and benefits from glass-specific coating.
